Contend for the faith: god's truth vs. homosexuality
Introduction
Although it is often said people can't be loving if they don’t accept the LGBTQ+ lifestyle - it isn't truly loving for Christians to remain silent when the Bible says that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Rather, it is loving to speak the truth — so that those in the bondage of sin will realize their sin, repent toward God, ask the Lord Jesus Christ to save them, and receive the free gift of eternal life!
Additionally, it's important to remember that Jesus, our greatest example, was full of both grace and truth: "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." (John 1:14). When Jesus came to the earth, He freely offered grace, but He wasn't hesitant to speak the truth, too.
For example, Jesus told the woman caught in adultery "Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more." (John 8:11) Jesus forgave the adulterous woman’s sin, but He still called adultery sin. Consider also how Jesus told Nicodemus about God's love in John 3:16, but He also told him about God's condemnation on those that do not believe (v. 18). It's clear from Scripture that Jesus wasn’t afraid to speak the truth, because Jesus knew that the truth "shall make you free.” (John 8:32). Hence, just as Jesus, we shouldn't be afraid to speak the truth, as long as we're doing it in love (Ephesians 4:15).
Finally, it's important when discussing these subjects to know that there is hope. In 1 Corinthians 6, Paul knew much of church members at Corinth had dealt with gross sexual sin in their past. Yet, Paul didn't use that against them, instead, he reminded them that their newfound faith in Christ Jesus had given them a new identity. Instead of their identity being found in their former sexuality, they now were identified as being washed and justified in the Lord Jesus Christ.
"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators [sexual immorality], nor idolaters, nor adulterers [sex outside of marriage], nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind [homosexuals], 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 "And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."
With these very important truths in mind, let's now examine humanism and its teaching of homosexuality.
Humanism & Homosexuality
The belief that man can be morally good apart from God is called humanism - and it's quickly taking hold over much of the next generation. It's a dangerous belief system, however, for it causes one to use their heart as a moral compass - resulting in calling good evil and evil good, perhaps most notably in accepting sexual sin.
For example, the American Humanist Association "AFFIRMS the right of every person to be affirmed in the sexual orientation and gender expression that best fit their personality, including expressions which may be singular, multiple, unclear, or none at all…”¹
As humanist teachings like these are taking a stronghold in America, the results have become clear: in 1996 68% did not approve of homosexual marriage but, as of May 2025, 68% do approve of homosexual marriage (source: Gallup).² This dramatic shift has overwhelmingly affected younger people, with Gallup noting that “LGBTQ+ identification is increasing as younger generations of Americans enter adulthood and are much more likely than older generations to say they are something other than heterosexual.”³
As young people continue to embrace humanism more and more, the easier it will be for them to embrace sinful lifestyles. The Devil knows this, and has subsequently put a giant target on their backs - attacking them almost daily.
Consider just a few of the ways the world encourages people to accept sexual sin:
In one of her concerts, Taylor Swift spoke of her song "You Need to Calm Down," (a song which shames those speaking out against homosexuality), telling her concert-goers: ‘You guys are screaming those lyrics in such solidarity...' '... And I wish that every place was safe and beautiful for people in the LGBTQ community.’ ”⁴
Simply googling “is homosexuality wrong?” (at the time of writing) — popped up the AI overview, which records that “Most major medical and mental health organizations do not consider homosexuality a mental disorder or a moral failing.’ ”⁵
Many public schools embrace humanism and teach acceptance of perverted sexual lifestyles as well. For example, Campus Pride put Ohio State on the list "of 40 campuses that have made communities and environments more welcoming for LGBTQ+ people."⁶
Unsurprisingly, the Devil even attempts to influence the next generation by questioning Scripture. For example, The Human Rights Council said "At the heart of the claim that the Bible is clear 'that homosexuality is forbidden by God' is poor biblical scholarship and a cultural bias read into the Bible."⁷
Even those who claim to be Christian have accepted humanism and pushed for the acceptance of sinful lifestyles.
For example, Christian TV producers Chip and Joanna Gaines featured a gay couple on their show "Back to the Frontier," where they depicted the couple as a normal family that should be accepted.⁸
Christian singer Carrie Underwood once said “I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love." Notice how Carrie Underwood said "I definitely think..." a prime example of humanism - basing morality upon what we think and not what God said.⁹
So, what does the Bible say about homosexuality?
Consider first of all how the Bible calls homosexuality an abomination. In Leviticus 20:13, it states that "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." Further, Leviticus 18:22 says "thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."
Oftentimes, critics of these verses teach that laws against homosexuality were only under Old Testament law, and, hence, do not apply today. However, the prohibition against homosexual acts is re-confirmed in the New Testament very clearly.
Notice for example, how Romans 1:26-27, refers to homosexuality as vile and unseemly: "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."
The New Testament even goes as far as to explicitly give an example of God's condemnation of homosexuality by recounting the story of Sodom and Gomorrah's judgement: "Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (Jude 1:3).
Why is homosexuality such a big deal?
Homosexuality is a rebellion against God. Consider firstly how it is
a rebellion against God's gift of marriage. From the very beginning God defined marriage as between one man and one woman: "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." (Genesis 2:24) Jesus reconfirmed this in the New Testament in Mark 10:7, saying "For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;" Jesus' confirmation proves an important point - from the garden to the time of Jesus, which was roughly 4,000 years, there was still only one type of marriage God recognized: a marriage between a man and a woman. The Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit also confirmed this in Ephesians 5:31: "For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh."
Secondly, homosexuality is a rebellion against the command to populate the earth. In the foundational book of Genesis, the Bible says "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.:" (Genesis 1:28). Biologically, it is impossible for the same sex to produce offspring and fulfill God's command to fill the earth. Although not every heterosexual couple can have children, difficulty having children is neither sinful nor a purposeful rejection of God's command, whereas homosexuality is both.
Thirdly, homosexuality is a rebellion against the only true family structure. In both Ephesians 5 and 6, the Apostle Paul talks in depth about familial roles, writing that husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church, wives are to submit to their husbands, and children are to honor their parents. In a homosexual relationship, all of the roles God intended are incapable of being fulfilled. The picture of Christ's love for the church is left void, submission to a husband is impossible, and children are robbed of having both a mother and a father, which is essential to the well-being of the child.
Ephesians 5:23-25: "Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it."
Ephesians 6:2-3 "2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) 3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth."
Fourthly, homosexuality is a rebellion against gender roles. God designed male and female to perfectly complement each other emotionally, physically, and spiritually. From the beginning of Creation, Genesis 2:18 records "And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him." Only after God created Eve did He say that creation was very good. From Scripture, it is clear that homosexual relationships cannot complement each other as God intended, leaving unfulfilled needs on the part of both people.
In conclusion, remember that Christ's blood can wash one completely clean from every sin. In 1 Corinthians, Paul deals with sexual sin extensively - but he reminds the church that after salvation, they no longer are known by their former sexual identity, writing "And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God" (1 Corinthians 6:11).
The moment one asks God to forgive them of their sins, wash them from their unrighteousness, and put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, they will be saved, given a new start, and washed completely from their sins.
